ACHILL BURIAL GROUNDS County Mayo by Eileen Hewson

Eileen Hewson spent some time on Achill Island in 2008 and through her surveys and other written records she has produced a detailed account of the memorials (about 550) found in the graveyards at Kildavnet, Slievemore, Dugort and Achill Sound. The markers of the famine victims stand alongside the many stones erected by families in Cleveland Ohio are poignant reminders of people who stayed or those who left to an uncertain future. Also noticeable is the lack of descendants buried in the same grave which infers that many left and never returned.
